Why Do Some Wounds Not Heal?
Most wounds heal in two to eight weeks. However, some wounds don’t heal as expected. In most cases, the cause of a non or delayed wound healing may be due to an infection, high blood sugar, immunosuppressive medications or diseases, vitamin deficiency or malnutrition. Other reasons why wounds might not heal include:
- Weakened immune system
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Poor nutrition
- Older age
- Overweight or obesity
- Long surgical procedures
- Incisions in the abdomen
- Improper wound care at home
- Excessive swelling
- New trauma to the wound site

What Are the Phases of Wound Healing?
Wound healing starts in your skin. You have three layers of skin: the epidermis, which is the outer layer; the dermis, which is the middle layer; and the hypo-dermis, which is the innermost layer. Wound healing starts with the epidermis. Your body wants to close the opening of the wound as quickly as possible.
The first phase of healing starts with the formation of a clot. Next, your body produces inflammation in all of the skin layers. Then, proliferation of new skin cells repairs the epidermis. Finally, remodeling of the skin layers creates new skin cells and repairs the deeper tissues. These stages overlap, and remodeling and maturation is the last and longest part of the wound healing process.
Who Performs Wound Care?
At Urgent Care + TeleHealth, several of our providers are certified National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy wound care specialists. Each of our specialists has received specialized training and passed a rigorous test. This test includes questions about wound care management, debridement, infection control and infection prevention. Our providers participate in ongoing training and education through the Wound Care Education Institute to maintain their certification.
What Are Treatment Options to Speed Wound Healing?
Our wound care specialists at Urgent Care + TeleHealth offer a range of treatment options to speed the wound healing process. We start with cleaning the wound either via irrigation or physical debridement. This removes dirt and debris. Frequent changing of the dressings every 1-3 days helps to prevent bacterial growth, keeps the wound moist and promotes faster healing times. When we change the dressing, we inspect the wound to assess its healing and look for signs of infection.
At Urgent Care + Telehealth, we also offer lifestyle tips to promote faster wound healing. We guide patients on quitting smoking to improve blood circulation, proper diet to lower blood sugar. We may prescribe medications to lower your blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and aid in smoking cessation. We also offer education on healthy eating, exercise and proper home care of wounds.
When you have a wound from a laceration, burn, varicose veins, poor circulation, or as a complication of diabetes, our specialists at Urgent Care + TeleHealth offer specialized wound care services. For more information or to schedule an appointment, reach out to us online or by phone today.
