How do Employers Benefit from Using Pre-Employment Physicals?

Employers benefit from using pre-employment physicals and physical ability tests because they streamline the hiring process, save costs, and reduce frustration down the road. These measures also contribute to a safer and more efficient workplace. Moreover, they help minimize the employer’s liability by confirming that prospective employees are physically capable of meeting the job’s demands.

Our aim at the Urgent Care + TeleHealth clinics is to keep employees safe on the job, help companies comply with OSHA and other requirements, and help companies reduce worker’s compensation claims.

Why Do Pre-Employment Physicals Matter?

Employer Benefits:
    • Confirm that employees can meet physical job requirements.
    • Reduce workers’ compensation claims and costs.
    • Comply with OSHA, DOT and other requirements.
    • Prevent workplace accidents.
    • Foster a company culture that values health and wellness.
Employee Benefits:
    • Help employees gain insight into their overall health.
    • Identify any underlying health conditions.
    • Learn about lifestyle changes that will enhance health.

What types of Businesses Use Pre-Employment Physicals at Urgent Care + TeleHealth?

Many different types of businesses and government agencies utilize our services for pre-employment screening. Some industry examples in the areas we serve near our clinics in Napa, Sonoma and Benicia include:

  • Wineries
  • Staffing Agencies
  • Hotels
  • Firefighters
  • Law Enforcement and Military
  • Railroad Workers

While some industries require specific tests, other employers take advantage of pre-employment physicals simply to choose the best-qualified candidates. Employers are able to customize the tests that need to be performed. For example, some employers ask us to include drug and alcohol screening as part of the physical, especially for safety-sensitive positions.

What are the Types of Pre-Employment Physicals?

  • General Pre-Employment Physicals: Checks vitals, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature, and assesses cardiovascular and respiratory health, reflexes, range of motion, hearing, and vision. Some professions also require a chest x-ray for TB or a spirometry test to measure lung function. In other circumstances, our occupational health providers conduct vision test testing for the ability to distinguish colors.
  • Physical Ability and Stamina Tests: Stamina tests are typically required for physically demanding or high-stress jobs such as law enforcement and firefighters. Tests include strength, flexibility, electrocardiogram (EKG), muscle tension, balance, and response to pressure.
  • DOT Physicals: Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals are required for safety-sensitive roles held by truck drivers and pilots and those that require a Class A or B commercial driver’s license. Tests in a DOT Physical include a review of health history, a vitals check, vision test, hearing test, urinalysis, and physical examination.

Pre-employment physicals are essential for maintaining a safe and efficient workplace. They ensure that employees are fit for their roles and help in complying with health and safety regulations. By understanding the different types of physicals and their purposes, employers can make informed decisions about their workforce’s health and safety.
