Questions and Answers about Travel Medicine

Every day, 1 million people cross international borders for work or pleasure. In many international destinations, preventable diseases are still common (Influenza, COVID-19, traveler’s diarrhea, malaria, hepatitis, typhoid, tetanus, etc), or conditions such as altitude, poor water quality or poor air quality can impact your health. By receiving appropriate preventive medications before you travel, you can prevent a serious illness while traveling.

What is travel medicine?

Travel medicine is a specialty of healthcare that includes: pre-travel assessment, preventive medication, vaccinations and checkups that is specific to your travel destination. The goal of travel medicine is to keep you healthy while traveling abroad.

For Which Diseases Does Urgent Care + TeleHealth Provide Travel Medication?

We offer preventative care medications for conditions such as travelers’ diarrhea, altitude sickness.

COVID-19

We offer FDA-approved vaccines for novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. At Urgent Care + TeleHealth, you can get the first two shots and COVID-19 booster shots.

Flu

Influenza, or “flu”, is a seasonal illness that requires an annual vaccination because the viruses frequently mutate and evade your body’s germ-fighting cells. We offer quadrivalent flu vaccine options for people ages six months and older.

Meningitis

Meningitis is a bacterial infection that may cause the lining of your brain to become inflamed and swollen. We offer meningitis vaccines that protect against four types of bacteria that cause meningitis.

Tdap

Tdap stands for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). This combination vaccine protects you from the toxins released by bacteria. Clostridium tetani infection causes painful muscle contractions that make it difficult to swallow, and tetanus is also called “lockjaw” because of this symptom. Diphtheria is another infection caused by bacterial toxins that may cause heart failure, breathing problems and paralysis. Pertussis triggers violent coughing spells that make it difficult to catch your breath.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A and B are diseases caused by viruses that infect your liver. We offer both hepatitis A and B vaccinations, which is a series of 2-3 shots over a six-month period depending on vaccine type. We also can give booster shots if previously vaccinated.

HPV

Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a sexually transmitted disease that may lead to cervical and oral cancers and genital warts. People over the age of 15 need three doses of the HPV vaccine spread across six months.

Polio

Polio is caused by a virus that attacks your spinal cord and brain, and it spreads through respiratory droplets and contaminated food and water. Most Americans were vaccinated against polio as children, but the CDC recommends a booster to anyone traveling to countries with active polio infections.

MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella)

Measles, mumps and rubella are highly contagious diseases. We offer the combined MMR vaccine for adults.

PPD

We offer the PPD test for tuberculosis screening

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a serious lung infection. We can provide the pneumococcal vaccine for travelers age 50 and older, who have not had the vaccine.

Varicella (SHINGLES)

Varicella zoster is the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles. If you never had chickenpox, or are over 55 years old, you should receive the varicella vaccine. Shingles is a reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox. Vaccination against shingles helps prevent this painful illness.

Typhoid

Typhoid fever is a serious diarrheal disease caused by Salmonella typhi species. The illness is spread through contaminated food or water or direct contact with a sick person, and usually begins 6-30 days after exposure. It can be treated with antibiotics and an oral vaccine.
