Concerned about Occupational Dust Exposure or exposure to asbestos? Get a Chest X-Ray B Read

Are you experiencing coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, tightness in the chest or an abnormal breathing pattern after exposure to mineral dusts such as coal mine dust, crystalline silica, or asbestos?

A B read x-ray “B read” is a specialized interpretation performed by NIOSH-certified physicians, focusing on identifying occupational lung diseases, particularly those caused by dust exposure like asbestos or silica, using a standardized protocol.

B readers examine the lungs in great detail, looking for scarring and other changes that might indicate the disease. These physicians know how different dusts affect the lungs and how each appears in an X-ray.

The results of a B read can help determine if a worker has pneumoconiosis and which treatments are appropriate. The B read can also indicate if a worker is eligible for federal benefits due to occupational dust exposure.

With easy parking and locations close to the freeway, Urgent Care + TeleHealth clinics make coming to an in-person appointment as convenient as possible. Our clinics accept most worker’s compensation and health insurance plans and also offer discounts for patients who pay with cash or use their HSA/ FSA/ Debit card for their co-pay.

Chest X-Ray FAQ

What is the purpose of a b read chest x-ray?

B reads are designed to detect and classify signs of pneumoconiosis (lung diseases caused by dust inhalation) in workers exposed to occupational hazards. The term “B read” comes from the NIOSH B Reader Program (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health).

B readers examine chest X-rays for specific signs and changes in the lungs that may indicate exposure to dusts and fibers, such as scarring, increased densities, or other abnormalities.

Is specialized training required to provide a b read x-ray?
Yes. B readers undergo specific training and certification by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to ensure they can accurately interpret chest X-rays using the International Labour Organization (ILO) classification system.
What are examples of exposures that require B Read x-rays?
Asbestos fibers from insulation or roofing, Beryllium in foundry and smelting operations, ceramics manufacturing, and dental lab work, and Cadmium from smelting & refining of metals and manufacturing batteries, plastics, coatings, or solar panels.
What are symptoms of occupational lung disease?

While the symptoms of occupational lung diseases may resemble other medical conditions or issues, the following are the most common symptoms, but each individual may experience occupational lung disease differently:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Abnormal breathing pattern
