Early Cancer Detection Can Save Your Life

Every year more than 600,000 Americans die from cancer. Unfortunately, many of these cancers do not have a common screening test recommended by the US government.

The Galleri test is a multi-cancer early detection screening test (MCED) or liquid biopsy. It does not diagnose cancer. Rather, this test uses AI to compare each test with its massive database to identify a cancer signal origin. In the rare instance that a cancer is detected, further workup (imaging, lab test, etc) may be necessary. The benefit is that early detection means that treatment can be initiated earlier, and the survival rate can be improved.

The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False negative and false positives results do occur. This test screens for 50+ cancers biomarkers. It has a specificity of 99% and a sensitivity of 70% and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 43%- meaning on avg 4/10 people with a Cancer signal detected actually had cancer.

Cancer Screening at Urgent Care + TeleHealth FAQ

How does the Galleri test work?

Cancers in the body release small fragments of DNA into the bloodstream. Although there are many types of cancer, these DNA fragments can serve as a unique “fingerprint” for detection. The Galleri test screens for multiple deadly cancers—often before symptoms appear—including those without existing screening guidelines. If a cancer signal is detected, the test also identifies a Cancer Signal Origin to help your healthcare provider determine the next steps for diagnosis.

What are the possible outcomes after a cancer screen?

After visiting an Urgent Care + TeleHealth clinc, you’ll receive your test results about two weeks after your blood sample is processed by the lab.

There are two possible results:

  • No Cancer Signal Detected

  • Cancer Signal Detected

Nearly 99% of people who take the Galleri test receive a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result—which is exactly what you want to hear. You should still continue with any routine cancer screenings recommended by your healthcare provider.

If a cancer signal is detected, we’ll discuss the results with you. The test can also predict the tissue or organ where the signal likely originated and this important information can help your healthcare provider decide on the next steps.

Who is the Galleri test for?

The Galleri test is recommended for adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those ages 50 or older.

More than 1 in 3 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. People over the age of 50 have a 13 times higher risk for cancer than those under 50. Cancer risk increases for everyone as they age, regardless of family history — only 5% to 10% of cancers are inherited.

  • The Galleri test is available by prescription only and is offered at Urgent Care + TeleHealth clinics.
  • Use of the Galleri test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.

Is the Galleri test clinically validated?

Yes, the Galleri multi-cancer early detection (MCED) test has undergone clinical validation. A study published in Annals of Oncology evaluated its performance in detecting cancer signals across multiple types. The test demonstrated a specificity of 99.5%, meaning a low false-positive rate, and an overall sensitivity of 51.5%, with sensitivity increasing in more advanced cancer stages. Additionally, when a cancer signal was detected, the test accurately predicted the cancer’s origin in 88.7% of cases.

What is the cost of the Galleri test?

The cost of the Galleri test, which includes a consultation and a blood draw is $1,300.  While this cost is not usually covered by insurance, you can use an FSA/HSA to cover the cost.
